  4. Edson Arantes do Nascimento,
  5. known as Pel├⌐, is recognized as one
  6. of the greatest soccer players in mod-
  7. ern history. He was born on October
  8. 23, 1940 in Tres Cora├ºoes in Brazil.
  9. As a 7-year old, he earned a living
  10. polishing shoes in between soccer
  11. matches with his street buddies. In
  12. 1954, the soccer prodigy joined AC
  13. Bauru, then switched to FC Santos in
  14. 1956. In 1957 he signed his first
  15. professional soccer contract and
  16. made his star debut against Sweden
  17. in the World Championship Finals of
  18. 1958. Only 17 years old, he scored 6
  19. goals, leading his team to victory and
  20. himself to soccer immortality.
  21.      Under Pel├⌐'s leadership, FC
  22. Santos became one of  the leading
  23. clubs of the 1960's. In 1970 he was
  24. elected world athlete of the year, and
  25. with good reason: it was due to his
  26. leadership and soccer virtuosity that
  27. Brazil was the World Champion in
  28. 1958, 1962 and again in 1970.  In 
  29. 1975, Pel├⌐ joined the American soccer
  30. club Cosmos in New York. Many had
  31. high hopes that this would elevate
  32. the popularity of soccer in the United
  33. States, but to no avail. Today, soccer
  34. remains the most popular world
  35. sport in all but the U.S. In 1977, Pel├⌐
  36. retired from the sport, and pursued a
  37. career in business and as an am-
  38. bassador at large for world soccer.
